Soft Launch of the Geocase 2.0 Data Portal for Earth Sciences!
The CETAF Earth Science Group (ESG) is excited to announce that the first Minimum Viable Product of GeoCASe2.0 is online and ready for use!
GeoCASe stands for Geoscience Collections Access Service, which was created in 2007. Now the completely revamped interface allows users to more efficiently find data on minerals, rocks, meteorite and fossils held in multiple European natural history museums and research institutions. Quick search capabilities, data download options, images and map views, and detailed specimen pages are among the new key functions of the portal.
GeoCASe 2.0 is a product of the CETAF ESG. The recent technical developments have been led by the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin and Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia. A GeoCASe advisory board was established in 2020 comprising a small team of ESG representatives dedicated to supporting portal development, and ensuring that GeoCASe 2.0 becomes a reliable and sustainable product for the Earth Science Community. Further development is following a comprehensive roadmap involving three stages, each with additional refinement and features. This soft launch of the new portal signals the successful completion of the first stage. The second stage in development follows in 2021 with emphasis on increasing the number of data providers and enhancing data quality as well as search functionality.
Eventually the service aims to become the main Earth Science service for the collections community, and provider to the DiSSCo research infrastructure.
