First CETAF Strategy Group Meeting
The CETAF Strategy Group met on the 20th June 2014, at the Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques de la Ville de Genève, Geneva. Switzerland to discuss over the forthcoming strategy of the Consortium.
The aim of the meeting was to define CETAF’s strategic objectives over the next 1, 2, 5 and 10 years and provide details on how these objectives will be achieved.
Eight participants attended, including via Skype, and addressed issues including the actual and potential role of CETAF, and teh need to focus on developing and promoting the strengths of CETAF to raise its profile, increase the recognition of the contribution of CETAF (collections, researchers, member institutions) to biodiversity based sciences and beyond, and to remain the united voice for “taxonomy” across Europe.
The discussions surrounding the nexr 10 years of CETAF were lead by the SWOT analysis carried last year, which highlighted common areas of interest across the CETAF membership (for example, collective projects, support for taxonomy across Europe).
The Group proposed five principle missions of CETAF over the next 10 years
1 Create a European Virtual Natural History Museum (interoperability, data standards, taxonomic framework)
2 Ensure access to collections and the mobility of researchers and collections within and across Europe (common policies, visitor programmes)
3 Raise the profile of CETAF within CETAF member institutions and within non-CETAF members across Europe as well as at the public and political levels within and across Europe
4 Focus on developing taxonomy education and training within and across Europe
5 Outreach, raising awareness, lobbying (focus on benefits to society as well as scientific importance)
